01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
From substantial burgers to handcrafted cakes, Nishi-Asakusa's Shochikuen Cafe focuses entirely on plant-based ingredients and gluten-free preparation. A prominent fixture on the food menu is the Yuba Tamago Burger, featuring tender tofu skin prepared like egg, tucked inside a fluffy bun for a satisfying bite at lunch or snack time. The kitchen also bakes compact personal pizzas with house-made crusts and sauces that avoid the pungent alliums (gokun), including a Vegan & Gluten-Free Margherita and a plant-based bacon pie.
The dessert counter is equally extensive for an afternoon coffee break. The signature multicolored Rainbow Cake draws immediate attention, alongside a rich chocolate cake filled with handmade vegan ganache crafted from organic cacao butter, seasonal chestnut mont blanc, and fruit shortcakes. Tiramisu served in glass jars is available in several variations using house-made soy milk cream cheese: the classic coffee version, Uji matcha with sweet azuki beans, and tart versions layered with slow-simmered mango or raspberry jam.
Beverages range from coffee ground fresh to order for every cup and soy-milk lattes to loose-leaf organic Earl Grey, Uji matcha lattes, and Taiwanese oolong tea, with set discounts available when ordered alongside a cake or burger. Fresh fruit smoothies such as avocado or strawberry, as well as house-made lemonade soda sweetened with beet sugar and domestic lemons, offer refreshing sips. Furnished with counter and table seating, equipped with free Wi-Fi, and accepting various cashless payments, it provides a quiet stop while exploring Asakusa.
